Practical Instructions
Practical Instructions is a series and body of work that I began in 2019 and completed in 2021. It consists of 12 scenes (artworks) collectively form a continuous, open-ended narrative merges concepts of transcendentalism, cosmic/esoteric spirituality, Christian mysticism. Inspired by the formal conventions of the cinematic and theatrical (visual languages photography shares a commonality). Each staged scene is part of a larger narrative and individual sub-narratives that include descriptive titles. It's a metaphysical piece in a number of ways, in irony, may in fact serve a basic instructional/educational, or didactic purpose. The series follows a central protagonist's goal to reveal the unseen, unknown dimensions originating from ethereal spaces, hidden by the appearances of everyday reality, but exposed to anyone who is prepared to develop a spiritual sensitivity, enlightened knowledge and the esoteric means and awareness necessary for obtaining super-sensory perceptions. A search the elusive truths at the center of elemental existence ensues. It begins with a desire for the truth of things stirred by an inner awareness, then outward as an initiate under the tutelage of a master teacher. A search for that which may point to the truth, an authentic search wholly independent of and beyond known physical laws, an unseen extension of the material world.
